Ex-NYPD Officer Who Robbed Banks Sentenced

NEW YORK (AP) ― A former New York Police Department rookie who's already serving 10 years and a month for robbing a Pennsylvania bank is getting one more year for robbing a Manhattan bank twice.

Christian Torres was sentenced Thursday to 6 1/2 years in prison for the New York robberies, but all but one year runs concurrently with his earlier sentence.

Defense lawyer Paul Missan says he's pleased with the sentence. He says the judge took into account factors like his client meeting with Sovereign Bank's head of security to give advice for how to prevent similar robberies.

In the 2007 New York robberies, a friend who was a teller helped him. Torres robbed another Sovereign branch in Reading, Pa., in April 2008.
