Zohar Atkins of Montclair, currently a senior at Brown University, said Sunday that he was "very, very excited" when he received the news Saturday night, shortly after interviewing with a selection committee. "It was very unexpected, and I'm really looking forward to the experience." The oldest of three children, Atkins is working toward a bachelors degree in classics and Judaic studies and a masters degree in history from the Ivy League school, where he serves as a trustee and prayer leader at the Brown-RISD Hillel, the campus' Jewish organization. Despite some recent improvements, the Big Apple's three major airports continue to be the country's worst air travel bottleneck. Through the first nine months of the year, they ranked first, second and third worst in on-time arrivals among the 31 major U.S. air hubs, according to federal statistics.

Officials: Atlantic City Fire Began In Pizza Shop

Investigators say a fire that destroyed businesses on the famous Atlantic City boardwalk apparently started in a pizza shop. No serious injuries were reported after the blaze broke out on the Central Pier shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday. It took nearly four hours to bring under control. Investigators say the flames quickly spread from the pizza shop to two clothing stores and a photography shop. The fire created billows of thick smoke.

NJ Man Sentenced In $1.8M Investment Scam

A Southern New Jersey securities broker who operated a $1.8 million investment fraud scheme has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison. Jeffrey Southard of Pittsgrove also must make full restitution and serve three years of supervised release after being released. He had pleaded guilty in June to charges of mail fraud and signing a false tax return. The 44-year-old Southard — who was sentenced Friday to a 97-month term in federal prison — admitted that he induced about 14 clients to purchase bonds that did not actually exist and provided false monthly statements to the investors.

2 Rescued From Burning Boat Off NJ Coast

Two people were rescued by the Coast Guard after the boat they were on caught fire off the central New Jersey coast. The fire was reported around 6:35 p.m. Saturday, when a crew member aboard the Finally reported that he and another person were leaving the boat and getting into a life raft about five miles east of Manasquan Inlet. But the decision made Saturday during its delegate assembly meeting in Plainsboro came with one condition: that the federal government must provide local school districts with the appropriate funding and flexibility to achieve the academic goals. Federal officials plan to offer millions of dollars in grants to encourage states to accept a set of standards that are being developed by the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers. The grants come from the federal stimulus law, which set aside $5 billion to push President Obama's vision of educational reform.

Corzine Signs Bill On Students' Criminal Records

Gov. Jon Corzine has signed a measure that gives high school administrators in New Jersey access to adult students' criminal histories. The bill requires that principals be made aware when any high school student 18 or older is charged with certain criminal offenses. And if a student 18 or older transfers, the old school must share criminal records with the new school. The bill was unanimously approved by the Assembly and Senate this summer.

NJ Man Pleads Not Guilty In Death Of 2-year-old

A Wildwood man accused in the beating death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old disabled son has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges. Cape May County prosecutors say the child, who had cerebral palsy, was injured in April while 32-year-old Damian Garcia baby-sat him at his girlfriend's apartment in Woodbine. When the boy's mother came home, she saw that her son was unconscious and turning blue. Legislation that Gov. Jon Corzine signed Friday bars the companies from buying lists of students' names and addresses from colleges. They also can't offer gifts to entice students to apply for a card. Companies also now must register with colleges if they want to sign up students on their campuses and provide credit education courses that explain how interest is calculated and discuss the proper use of credit. They also must certify that student applicants successfully completed the course.
