Newark Seeking $$ To Continue Gun Buyback Program
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ―
Newark officials are scrambling to find more money to fund a gun buyback program that exceeded even the most optimistic expectations.
Nearly 340 guns were turned in over a two-day period this week. At $200 per firearm, that exhausted the $50,000 set aside for the entire program, which was scheduled to continue at four other locations over the next several weeks.
Police Director Garry McCarthy said the program has been suspended until more funds are raised.
Forfeitures from criminal cases in Essex County funded the program along with money from the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Authorities displayed the weapons Friday. They ranged from antique pistols to sawed-off shotguns, hunting rifles and more modern handguns.
