Poll: Philadelphians Most Generous Tippers

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― The City of Brotherly Love has been named the most generous when it comes to gratuity.

Zagat's 2009 guide to Philadelphia area restaurants in is and Zagat says an independent poll has found Philadelphians are the top tippers in the country.

According to Zagat's Web site, "Philadelphians are the nation's highest average (self-reported) tippers, leaving 19.6 percent compared to the countrywide average of 19 percent."

CBS reporter Mary Stoker Smith hit the streets to see what Philadelphians had to say.

"I love going out to eat here, everybody is friendly," said self-proclaimed big tipper Renee Jesso. "I've never had bad service."

"People love going out to dinner here, so maybe tipping more is part of it," said former waiter John Hindman.

People in Philly say when it comes to eating out, they believe in showing their appreciation.

Experts say diners should leave behind a minimum of 15 percent, 20 percent for good service and if the service was exceptional, leave more than 20 percent.
