Man Unearths Box Filled With Depression-Era Cash

MILWAUKEE (AP) ― Dan Deming says he occasionally looked around for buried treasure rumored to be on his central Wisconsin farm. But when he tore down a 100-year-old shed on his property, a rusted box tumbled out. It was full of cash.

Just how much money was there is hard to decipher. Dated between 1928 and 1934, the bills were so deteriorated that it was hard to accurately count. But the box also contained scraps of newspaper with dollar amounts written on them totaling $1,700. Deming has turned it all over to the U.S. Treasury, which redeems mutilated currency for face value.

And he jokes about whether he'll find more cash when it's time to tear down an old barn on his land.
