Dog Rescued From Montgomery County Sewer
UPPER PROVIDENCE, Pa. (CBS 3) ―
What
started out as a fun evening chasing rabbits ended up as a long night trapped
in a sewer for a
Montgomery
County
dog.
Jasper, a
150-pound Newfoundland, got loose from his Upper Providence home after spotting a small
creature at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
After a
three hour search, neighbors said they heard barking coming from a sewer near Cottonwood Drive and Sugarberry Lane.
It appeared Jasper lodged himself in the sewer while trying
to chase down a furry friend.
"He found his way in and couldn't get out. He was too big to
turn around," said John Rafner of the Trappe Fire Company.
Elaine Berkle said she wanted to jump in and save her
precious pooch, but was told otherwise
"I thought I could crawl in there and get him myself, but they didn't want me
to do that," she said.
Firefighters were unable to remove the heavy grate by themselves
and called on the Township to bring in the heavy equipment.
After the grate was removed, Jasper was safely reunited with
his family at about 10:30 p.m.
"I'm just glad he's out and home," Berkle said.
