Gov. Rendell Withdraws Willow Grove Takeover Plan
WILLOW GROVE (AP) ―
Gov. Ed Rendell has withdrawn a plan to turn the Willow Grove military base in suburban Philadelphia into a state-owned installation.
In a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday, Rendell says the Air Force's decision not to provide the Pennsylvania Air National Guard's 111th Fighter Wing with a flying mission and the state's finances made it impossible for the state to take ownership of the base and maintain its runway.
Department of Military and Veterans Affairs spokeswoman Joan Nissley says the 111th Fighter Wing will remain at Willow Grove, although it will have a new mission. The unit will lose its six remaining A-10 fighter jets next summer.
Rendell says Willow Grove will still be home to units from the National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve.
