Gas Main Break Prompts Evacuations In West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (CBS 3) ― A natural gas main break has prompted evacuation of a several homes and businesses in West Chester, Pennsylvania Friday.

Authorities say an eight inch break in the high-pressured gas main happened at about 9:30 a.m. near High and Miner Streets.

Utility crews and emergency personnel responded to the scene and evacuated a two-block radius of homes and businesses. PECO crews dug a hole in the street to access the main and successfully turned off the valve at about 11:30 a.m. Authorities deemed the area was safe and allowed residents to slowly return to their homes. At least 40 customers were without power and while crews worked to cap the main.

No injuries were reported. Authorities say the break was caused by a contractor who accidentally struck the line.
