A water main break flooded a Southwest Philadelphia neighborhood early Friday morning.
Officials said a 30-inch water main burst on Lindbergh Boulevard between 63rd and 65th Streets in the Elmwood section of the city at about 4:30 a.m.
Fast moving waters quickly flooded roadways throughout the area. Officials said water service was not affected to nearby homes, but as many as 12 to 14 residences were flooded.
A claims adjuster with the Philadelphia Water Department said residents are not financially for the damage.
"The city pays for it
we have a claims fund put aside every year to take care of these matters. We have a fund also for the cleaning companies to come out and any plumbers that we may need to replace water heaters or heaters," adjuster Bob Monaghan said.
Lindbergh Avenue has been closed while the Philadelphia Water Department works to repair the main. Crews were forced to dig an enormous hole in the street as a result of the break. They are expected to return early Saturday morning to patch up the hole.
Experts said the water main is believed to be approximately 80 years old and has a life expectancy of up to 120 years.
The cause of the break is under investigation.
