Police: Child Used In Pick-Pocket Scheme
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Philadelphia police are investigating a pick-pocket scheme on the Campus of University of Pennsylvania that allegedly involved a six-year-old boy.
Trusting students at the University of Pennsylvania's Houston Hall, who leave their bags on floors, chairs and in some cases, ignored, became targets of a pick-pocket scheme Thursday.
Two women became victims and eyewitnesses called police.
"Somebody thought that they could take advantage of a young lady at one of our eateries, and actually tried to go right into her pocket and take her stuff," said Maureen Rush, VP of UPenn Public Safety.
The suspect, a male in his mid-40s, was arrested in the building. He was accompanied by his young nephew whose backpack he used to hide stolen credit cards.
Police said this is the third time in six months they have caught thieves using children to steal and University of Pennsylvania officials said their closed circuit surveillance captured video of this crime as well.
"Now I am just not even going to take a chance to even get up and get a napkin or anything, I think I'm always going to keep it with me, no matter what," said senior Megan Brindle.
