More Workers Needed For NJ Unemployment Claims
TRENTON (AP) ―
The state is assigning more workers to help cope with a growing backlog of unemployment benefit claims.
Governor Corzine on Friday directed Labor Commissioner David Socolow to deploy an additional 130 workers to help process claims.
Of those, 44 will be temporary hires. The rest will be transferred from other departments or from within the Department of Labor.
The announcement came as the national unemployment rate hit a 15-year high of 6.7 percent.
New Jersey's unemployment rate hit 6 percent in October, the latest month for which state figures are available. That's the highest rate in five years. New Jersey employers slashed 6,000 jobs in October, the third consecutive monthly loss.
