Truckers Hit Traffic Heading To D.C. Gas Protest
WASHINGTON (AP) ―
A caravan of truckers heading to Washington to protest
rising gasoline prices is stuck in traffic in suburban Maryland.
The group, Truckers and Citizens United, is
planning to drive into the city this morning. They will travel past the White
House and Capitol before holding a rally on the Capitol lawn.
Ron Wenger is an organizer with the group. He
says they have a procession of about 350 vehiclesincluding trucks, buses and cars.
They had hoped to drive into D.C. by 9 a.m. but have been held up on Interstate
270.
The drivers plan to park their trucks at RFK
Stadium and then march and take shuttles over to the Capitol.
They're calling on Congress to stop subsidizing
big oil companies, release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves, end exports
of oil from Alaska and regulate transportation brokers and fees paid to truckers.
