Sunoco Closing Delaware Refinery After Fire

NEW CASTLE (CBS 3) ― Sunoco officials announced part of their Marcus Hook refinery will be permanently shut down following a massive fire in May.

Officials said they are stopping production at their ethylene complex due to a lack of demand combined with severe damage the plant sustained during a fire on May 17.

"This was a very difficult decision because it will result in the layoff of approximately 40-50 employees. It is never easy to take steps that impact the lives of workers and their families," a statement from Sunoco read.

Heavy flames erupted from the plant in New Castle, Delaware after reports of an explosion.

A preliminary investigation revealed a pipe failure led to the release of combustible gas. Sunoco officials said the failed pipe has been removed for further testing in hopes of preventing any future incidents.

Officials said they are working to finalize severance packages for the affected workers. Operations at the nearby polymer manufacturing plant will continue.
