Philly's Top Free 'Staycations'
Tripadvisor.com Announces Best Philly Freebies
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
When it comes to summer travel, many are putting the brakes on extended road trips for cost cutting options closer to home.
Travel websites like
tripadvisor.com are tapping into the trend by featuring U.S. city's top 5 free attractions. So, what are the top Philly freebies? City Hall, Independence Hall and Reading Terminal Market all made the list.
"Any time we get a positive notice or sense of things that are important to see or do in Philadelphia, we are thrilled," said
Greater Philly Tourism Communications Director Donna Schorr.
Since Philadelphia is positioned about three-hundred and fifty miles from twenty-five percent of the country, Schorr says the city is taking full advantage of the 'Staycation' phenomenon.
"Philly is a very walkable city ... and there are great educational, historical and fun things to do here," said Schorr.
As America's birthplace, its no surprise that here in Philadelphia, history tops the list.
"Independence Hall and Congress Hall are part of Independence Historic Park, which is the most historic square mile in the country. So, it's important to re-educate yourself about the process," explained Schorr.
Dating back to 1892, the historic Reading Terminal Market ranked fifth on the list.
"You can still walk in any day of the week and enjoy the food there or take it home to cook."
Schorr went on to say that while the list included great sites within the Philadelphia area, it neglected to mention one of her personal favorites, the Liberty Bell.
"It is certainly free and open to the public and a lot of people come here just to see the Liberty Bell."
