Employee Shot Inside Northeast Philadelphia Kmart

PHILADELPHIA (CBS3/AP) ― A Northeast Philadelphia Kmart worker was shot and seriously wounded when he intervened in an argument between a co-worker and her ex-boyfriend on a store loading dock, police said.

The incident happened inside a Kmart department store in the 8800 block of Frankford Avenue in Torresdale at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said Daryl Anthony Birch, 30, walked into the store with a loaded weapon looking for his estranged girlfriend, a store employee.

An apparent argument ensued between Birch and his ex-girlfriend and police said he followed her into a loading dock area of the store.

Police said Birch then pulled out his semi-automatic weapon and began firing.

A store manager who tried to intervene during the incident was shot multiple times. He was rushed to Frankford-Torresdale Hospital with a graze wound to his head, and bullet wounds to his hand and chest. Police said he is expected to recover.

Birch's girlfriend was not injured during the shooting. She apparently had a restraining order against Birch.

Birch fled the scene after shooting and police searched nearby residential areas and businesses in hopes of locating him.

Birch is described as being approximately 5'11" tall, and was last seen wearing a black hat and black hoodie. Birch was reportedly driving a gold Nissan with a black door and Pennsylvania tags GFG-3029.

No arrests have been made. The incident remains under investigation.
