Driver Dies After Crash Into Delaware Hotel

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS 3) ― An out-of-control car slammed into a group of workers sitting on a wall outside the Sheraton Suites in Wilmington, Delaware Tuesday.

Police say the car crashed into the hotel at about 10 a.m. after exiting a parking garage in the 1000 block of Washington Street. The car struck the hotel wall at 400 Delaware Avenue before hitting the five victims who were taking a break from a carpet installation job.

The five men sustained minor injuries and were transported to Christiana Hospital.

The unidentified male driver, a 53-year-old man from New Jersey, died at the scene of the accident.

A parking lot employee said he saw the driver moments before the incident suffering from apparent physical problems.

"He just looked white as a ghost and you could see his eyes looked all glassy and all of a sudden, I turned around and I seen the guys sitting out here like they usually do every day and then all of a sudden, I heard a bang," eyewitness Joe Hilsee said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Authorities say the Department of Licenses and Inspections responded to the scene to assess the structural damage and hotel operations were not affected by the incident.
