Parents in a Montgomery County school district yelled claims of discrimination after a controversial redistricting plan was passed Monday evening.
The Lower Merion school board voted 6-2 in favor of redistricting areas of South Ardmore, North Narberth and Penn Valley in order to balance enrollment at the new Harriton and Lower Merion High Schools.
An hour before the vote, parent and students lined the roads outside Lower Merion High School to protest the plan.
"We're really upset because we've been in the Lower Merion Township since we were little kids and we want to walk," said student Angelica Dorsaneo.
School officials said district is currently divided with 70 percent of families in the eastern end near Lower Merion High and only 30 percent in the western end near Harriton.
The proposal will rebalance the district in order to even out the number of students at each school. While officials said the move will offer students more class options, opponents said the plan unfairly targets low-income and minority families in South Ardmore and North Narberth.
In a statement, the school superintendant said, "this is a time that calls for understanding and healing."
Opponents said they are not finished their fight and are considering a legal option.
