Hip-Hop Icons 'Promote The Vote' In North Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A few famous faces from the music industry came to North Philadelphia to 'Promote the Vote' during a massive block party Monday.

Stars Jay-Z, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Mary J. Blige, along with hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, attended a packed rally at North Broad Street and Susquehanna Avenue to encourage Philadelphians to make their voices heard in Tuesday's election.

"We have a responsibility to ourselves, our children and our country and our new leader, but we have to go out and vote to make the difference," Mary J. Blige said during the rally.

The icons have been working with the Obama-Biden 'Promote the Vote Team' to let voters know their rights and to encourage everyone to take part in the historic 2008 election.

"Tomorrow, we gonna shock the world and show up in record numbers, are you with me Philly?" Sean "Diddy" Combs asked the crowd.

Police said roughly 4,500 people attended the rally. Because of the event, the 2200 block of North Broad Street was shut down until about 4 p.m.

Senators Barack Obama and John McCain spent the day pushing to reach undecided voters in battleground states like Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Democrat Barack Obama's running mate, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, held a rally Monday evening at Marconi Park in South Philadelphia. Jimmy Rollins and other members of the World Series Champion Phillies were in attendance.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani campaigned for McCain in the Philadelphia region and Scranton.

Former President Bill Clinton campaigned Monday for Democrats in Erie, Johnstown and Wilkes-Barre while Caroline Kennedy visits Scranton.
