A former Montgomery County high school teacher has been arrested after allegations he had an inappropriate relationship with a female student six years ago.
Patrick Clugston, 44, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, indecent assault and corruption of minors following an alleged relationship with a student at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School.
Montgomery County Prosecutors said Clugston, an English teacher, began talking with a female freshman online in 2003. By March 2003, authorities said their relationship became intimate.
The pair allegedly had encounters on school grounds up until the end of their relationship in June 2003.
School officials did not learn of the incident until March 2009 after being contacted by the former student. Clugston partially to his misconduct, saying he kissed the girl on the cheek, before handing in his resignation.
"He was absolutely broadsided by the allegations that were brought against him. My client has been a good family man, he's been an exemplary teacher at the school," said defense attorney Martin Mullaney.
School officials sent out a letter about four weeks ago to parents and alumni alerting them of the situation.
Clugston was arraigned in a Montgomery County courtroom Tuesday and is free after posting 10 percent of his $25,000 bail.
