Port Richmond Pursuit Ends With Gunfire

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A Philadelphia Police officer was injured and two suspects were wounded following a pursuit in the Port Richmond section of the city Tuesday.

Police were called to the 2900 block of Salmon Street after reports of a suspect with a gun just before 3 p.m.

Arriving officers began pursuit of a red minivan matching the description of eyewitness reports.

The minivan crashed into a tree a short time later and the suspects attempted to flee on foot.

An officer was involved with a brief struggle with one of the suspects, which resulted with the suspect being shot in the stomach.

"The officer's training is to retain that gun at all costs," said Philadelphia Police Lieutenant Frank Vanore. "One of the suspects was hit one time and that was from the officer's gun."

The wounded suspect was taken to Temple University Hospital in unknown condition.

Another officer suffered a sprain while chasing a second suspect on foot. The officer was treated and released at Northeastern Hospital.

The second suspect reportedly suffered a minor head injury in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
