Alleged Philly Cop Killer Drops Court Challenge

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ― A man accused of murdering a Philadelphia police officer two years ago has withdrawn a motion to suppress his alleged confession.

John Lewis, 23, is charged with killing Officer Chuck Cassidy on Oct. 31, 2007. Investigators say Cassidy was checking in on a doughnut shop that had been robbed before when he walked in on a robbery. Cassidy died a day later from a gunshot wound to the head.

Lewis told Common Pleas Court Judge Jeffrey Minehart on Tuesday the decision to withdraw the challenge was not recommended by his lawyers.

Police say Lewis confessed after being arrested in a Miami homeless shelter a few days after the shooting.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys declined comment, citing a judge's gag order.

Jury selection is set for Wednesday.
