A teenager driver has admitted to smoking marijuana the night before a deadly high-speed crash in Delaware County.
Joseph Sherlock, 33, was killed when his green Honda was struck by a speeding SUV driven by 18-year-old Jonathon Truehart Township at the intersection of Route 352 and Knowlton Road in Middletown at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
"He (Truehart) was way above the posted 45 mph speed limit," said Pennsylvania State Police Captain David Young.
State Police said the teen was initially spotted speeding through a 15 mph school zone near Parkside Elementary School on Edgemont Avenue.
A Parkside officer began following Truehart and was joined by a Brookhaven officer when the SUV continued northbound on Route 352.
While State Police said both officers were following with lights and sirens, officers apparently lost sight of the SUV due to the speed it was traveling.
Truehart eventually slammed into several vehicles on Route 352.
Joe Zamonski, the Deputy Fire Chief for Brookhaven, was parked at a red light when he saw the Explorer coming straight towards his pickup. But instead of striking the pickup, the SUV crashed into Sherlock's Honda, killing him instantly.
Police said Truehart attempted to hide under a vehicle following the crash, but he was apprehended and taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Trueheart was arraigned in his hospital bed Wednesday morning and charged with Third Degree murder, three counts of aggravated assault, one count of involuntary manslaughter, one count of homicide by vehicle, reckless endangerment, and various vehicle charges.
