Lightning Strike Injures Bucks Toddler, Babysitter

LOWER MAKEFIELD, Pa. (CBS 3) ― A toddler and his babysitter are recovering after being struck by lightning while attempting to seek shelter at a Bucks County swim club.

The incident happened at about 3:10 p.m. at the Brookside Swim and Tennis Club in Lower Makefield Township Wednesday.

According to police, the victims, Bridget Gallagher, 21, and a 3-year-old boy she was babysitting, were attempting to seek shelter when lightning struck a nearby tree and transferred to them. Police say Gallagher was carrying the child and suffered more extensive injuries.

"We heard a big crash," said witness Kathy Widman.

Both victims were taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Medical Center in Langhorne. The child was then transported to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Gallagher and toddler were listed in serious condition Thursday morning.

In a separate incident, a short time after the lightning strike at the swim club, a police officer in neighboring Bethel, was jolted by lightning while inside the township's firehouse. The officer suffered non life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.
