Once upon a time, when cheaper gas prices existed, heading
down to the Jersey
Shore was a cheap, fun
and close vacation.
Now that gas prices are higher than ever, businesses at
the shore realized they need to find another way to get people to visit.
The Showboat Casino used to give away prizes such as free
food or rooms, but now it is giving away free gas cards, and that is not only
what guests want, but it is what they need.
Every Friday, the more someone plays, the more he or she
can win in free gas at the casino.
"We have people winning as much as $1,000, or earning as
much as $1,000 in gas every Friday," said Jay Snowden, Senior Vice President and
General Manager at The Showboat.
Another business, the Scarborough Inn in Ocean City, N.J., started offering guests a $50
gas card for mid-week stays at the inn.
Many people agreed if they got free gas to come down the
shore, they would come down a lot more often.
"Free gas coming down and going back, that's just about a
round trip. It would be foolish not to," said Frank Birmanehn of Philadelphia.
