A
driver is being held on $330,000 bail after police say he triggered a deadly
accident that shutdown Interstate 95 for several hours Friday.
The accident happened at about 10:00 a.m. near the Bridge Street exit in Bridesburg.
Eyewitnesses said the driver of a Monte Carlo,
identified by police as 25-year-old Steven Hafto of Berlin, N.J.,
began driving erratically in the southbound lanes before striking a pick-up
truck.
"In and out of traffic, at some point in time, he collided with the
pick-up truck, the pick-up truck lost control and rolled over the
guardrail," Sgt. Shawn Toboz of the Pennsylvania State Police said.
The pick-up truck flipped into the northbound lanes and the two occupants were
ejected from the vehicle.
The driver of the pick-up truck, Ferdinand Ramirez-Villaneuva, 50, of Philadelphia was
pronounced dead at the scene.
"Upon being ejected, the driver of the pick-up truck was impacted with a
northbound car," Sgt. Shawn Toboz said.
The female passenger, 50-year-old Anna Torres, was taken to Hahnemann University
Hospital where she is
listed in critical condition.
Hafto was arrested at the scene and has been charged with driving under the
influence, homicide by vehicle while DUI and other related charges.
"He was placed under arrest for being under the influence of a substance,
we don't know what the substance is at this point in time," Sgt. Toboz
said.
Sgt. Toboz said results of a blood test could take up to a week.
Both lanes of I-95 were shut down for several hours as a result of the accident.
