Rendell Announces Bridge Repair Initiative

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS 3) ― Governor Ed Rendell announced over 1,100 bridges throughout the state are included in his "Rebuild Pennsylvania" initiative awaiting approval from the General Assembly.

The initiative was developed in hopes to fix worn out bridges in hopes of avoiding future interruptions.

Rendell said the state has nearly tripled its investment in bridge repairs, but more work is needed. He announced the plan while standing near the George Wade Bridge, which takes Interstate 81 over the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg.

Pennsylvania currently has the most structurally deficient bridges in the nation with near 6,000 in need of work. The Rebuild Pennsylvania initiative would add an additional $200 million a year in funding, cutting the number of deficient bridges by 40 percent within 10 years.

Also included in the plan would be funding for flood control, state-owned dams, rail freight and aviation projects. The governor urged the General Assembly to approve the initiative in hopes of launching the project as soon as possible.

Below is a list of bridges that would be affected by the plan by county:

Berks County

Bucks County

Chester County

Delaware County

Lehigh County

Montgomery County

Northampton County

Philadelphia County
