As gas prices rise above $4 a gallon at several area gas stations, one infamous Philadelphian offered drivers a reprieve Tuesday.
In honor of his new sports drink, "Skinny Water," Pat Croce cut the fat off of gas prices by giving away free fill-ups at a Lukoil station in Northern Liberties.
Drivers began lining up as early as 2 a.m. for a chance to get a free tank of gas at the station near Spring Garden and the Columbus Boulevard. The giveaway began at noon and ended at 1 p.m.
The promotion comes just as the area price in the Philadelphia region hits a record average of $3.83 a gallon according to AAA.
AAA officials said seven area stations, including three in Conshohocken, have broken $4 a gallon.
Due to the skyrocketing gas prices, drivers told AAA they are planning to drive less this Memorial Day weekend, the first time since 2002 those figures have dropped.
"For my car to be filled up, it takes over $100 and its kind of hard right now to stretch it out," said Anthony Pearson of Yeadon.
