Stranded Bird Soars To Safety

WILLINGBORO, N.J. (CBS 3) ― After five nights spent high up in the branches of a Burlington County tree, an escaped exotic bird is back safe in its cage.

T.J., a 20-year-old blue and gold Macaw, was apparently startled by the sound of a garage door, sending him high into a neighbor's tree in Willingboro on Thursday, July 24.

Not even the promise of food could bring the stranded bird back down from his 30-foot high perch. Owners Jay and Marianne Worth became concerned after numerous rescue attempts proved unsuccessful.

"He's part of the family. He's been with us for 20 years, since he was a baby," Jay said.

Because many Macaws have their wings clipped, they often are able to fly up, but are fearful to fly down. T.J. was somehow able to weather the weekend storms, but rising temperatures and a lack of food and water caused concerns for the bird's safety to soar.

The promise of a cool drink of water sent T.J. flying onto Marianne's arm as CBS 3 cameras were rolling on Tuesday, July 29.

Ecstatic to have him back at home, the Worth family rewarded T.J. with his favorite treats, pizza, potato chips and orange Gatorade to dip his beak into. He also received a fresh trim to his wings.

The bird's owners said this is not the first time he has taken flight. When he was about 10 years old, T.J. apparently went on a three week vacation.
