Abandoned N.J. Puppy Is Now A New 'Buddy'

MOORESTOWN (CBS 3) ― A dog left for dead outside a Burlington County mall has now become a furry inspiration to others.

The tiny white pup, now named Buddy, has been given a new 'leash' on life by his new owners, the Newland family.

Buddy, a Maltese mix, was found abandoned inside a crate outside a Macy's at the Moorestown Mall on February 12.

Mitch Knapp was on his break when he spotted the frigid little Buddy.

"As I got closer to it, I saw a furry, white little guy," he said. "It was a freezing cold day and the snow was coming down and I said, 'Well, you can't stay out here,' and I took him in the store."

Brenda Newland saw the dog, believed to be about one-year-old, and instantly found a furry friend. She sent her husband a photo and text message of Buddy with the question, "Can we keep him?"

"He said, 'Do what you need to do,'" Brenda said.

An examination from the Vet found Buddy had previously broken his pelvis in eight to ten places, but he has since recovered.

Now Buddy and his new family are enjoying their new life together.

"This little guy kind of breathed life back into the family, back into the house," said Kevin Newland.

The Newlands spend approximately $1,500 in care for their fuzzy Buddy, but fellow Macy's workers have also become attached to the tiny pooch, raising $300 towards the costs.
