It must be picnic basket season as police are investigating yet another bear sighting in the region.
Reports of a wandering bear were called in from a home on Deep Creek Road in New Hanover, Montgomery County just after 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
A homeowner spotted the bear as it enjoyed an early morning breakfast of seeds and garbage before running into the woods.
A second bear sighting was reported just after 11 a.m. at a home near Route 663 and Deep Creek Road, a short distance from the first encounter.
New Hanover Township Police Chief Mike Dykie said the bear was still at the scene when he arrived at the home.
"He went to a bird feeder and actually took it apart and took the part with the seeds into the woods," said
Officers with the Pennsylvania Game Commission reportedly fired a tranquilizer dart at the animal, just barely missing their target. They said they will attempt to catch the bear by placing cage traps in the area.
"Normally they bait them with anything sweet. Donuts are used a lot for baiting the bear. Because they're real sweet, especially the jelly-filled ones, they'll really smell those," said Montgomery County Wildlife Control Officer Ray Madden.
Neighbors believe there may be more than one bear in the neighborhood as they claim the bears were different sizes.
Authorities remain on the lookout for the animal. If you see a bear in your area, contact police.
