Airport Streamlining Baggage Screening System
Philadelphia International Airport is getting $26 million in federal stimulus money to upgrade its baggage security system.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano made the announcement at the airport Monday.
The money will go toward a streamlined system that will eliminate the need for bags to be screened manually for explosives.
The airport has had such inline screening systems in place in some terminals for years. The new project will add it to more sections of the airport.
Construction is expected to start in the fall and take a year or two to finish.
When the project is done, the airport will have four inline baggage screening systems instead of eight separate screening locations.
