Overwhelming Support Shown For Abandoned Baby Boy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Authorities in Pennsylvania are trying to deal with an outpouring of support for a newborn baby boy found abandoned on a front lawn more than one month ago.

A West Philadelphia man on his way to purchase lottery tickets discovered the young child inside a trash bag outside a home near 58th and Ludlow Streets on March 11th.

The baby boy, who still was attached to an umbilical cord, was rushed to an area hospital where he was found to be healthy, despite being outside in 40-degree temperatures.

Authorities said it's a miracle the baby didn't suffocate or freeze to death.

"It is extraordinary, particularly this point in the year when the temperatures are pretty cold outside," said acting DHS Commissioner, Dr. Arthur Evans.

The baby is now in good health and as he grows stronger, so does the support from those touched by the story.

Since the story first made news, officials said they have received over 75 phone calls from those interested in adopting the abandoned child. As of yet, no decisions have been made on a permanent home for the unidentified baby, who remains in state care in Lancaster.

Investigators are still working to locate the child's mother. Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact police.
