Wintry Weather May Ice Evening Commute
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
All eyes are on the sky as winter storms from the west are expected to hit our region Wednesday.
The system that brought snowflakes to Pittsburgh beginning at about 8 a.m. is making its way east
The storm may bring a wintry mix of snow and ice beginning in the early afternoon hours and carrying through to the evening commute.
While just an inch or less of accumulation is expected, freezing temperatures could create issues during the evening rush.
Just over a week ago, wintry weather wreaked havoc on area roadways, closing many bridges and causing severe delays.
PennDOT crews have been preparing for any pending winter weather in hopes of avoiding a similar rush hour mess Wednesday evening.
"We have the ability to call out as many as 400 trucks," Gene Blaum of PennDOT said.
Trucks have been coating area roadways with a saltwater solution in hopes of slowing the accumulation
"We've began spraying major highways, interstates and other key expressways throughout the region with a salt brine," said Blaum.
Like a majority of the region, PennDOT officials said they are keeping a watchful eye on the forecast to determine their response.
CBS 3's Weather Center says the next major winter weather to watch is expected Friday, with significant accumulations possible throughout the day.
