Rising above a stack of bones and pool of hot sauce,
professional eater Joey Chestnut stood tall as he claimed his third Wing Bowl
crown in a row Friday.Off of the gridiron and into the fryer, 30 of the most
voracious eaters gathered at the Wachovia
Center Friday for 610 WIP's Wing
Bowl 16.
Piles of chicken wings, hungry competitors, scantily clad Wingettes and over
20,000 fans packed the house as doors opened at 5
a.m.
Among those who pushed the limits of human consumption were the defending
two-time champion and professional competitive eater Joey Chestnut and the only
member of WIP's Wing Bowl Hall of Fame, Bill
'El Wingador' Simmons.
Last year, Chestnut devoured the competition by scarfing down approximately
180 wing in the 30 minute competition. This year he trounced his own record,
ripping through a staggering 241 wings.
'El Wingador' came out of retirement in an effort to dethrone the reigning
champ, but was unable to beat the champs blinding pace.
Along with the nine pro-eaters competing, 21 local entrants hand picked by
WIP tried to see how far they can push their stomachs.
During Wing Bowl, the rules are simple: piles of wings will be placed in
front of the contestants, who will cram as many as they can down their throat
during two 14 minute rounds. A third two minute round will be held, with
subsequent tie-breakers if necessary.
Any wings that 'resurface' mean a disqualification. One competitor met an early
end by disqualification by Wing Bowl Commissioner Pat Croce for expelling wing
from the nose.
Tickets to this year's event sold out within 45 minutes in December.
Proceeds will be donated to charity.
