Wilmington Mother Killed By Stray Bullet

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS 3) ― A young mother was killed after getting caught in the crossfire in Delaware Monday afternoon.

The deadly incident happened at about 4:00 p.m. in the 400 block of S. Van Buren Street in Wilmington.

According to police, the victim was getting her 3-year-old and some other children ready to go swimming when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet.

"It's just sad, it's a very strong community of good-living people who want to do the right thing and unfortunately we have had several instances of violence recently," Councilman Kevin Kelley said.

Kelley said in the last two weeks, there have been two murders and three shootings in that particular section of the city.

"We're not going to let the thugs take over the city, we're going to continue to work with the police and eradicate the crime," Kelley said.

So far, there is no word on any arrests.
