Bail Denied In Police Shooting From 41 Years Ago

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ― A judge has denied bail for a man who shot a Philadelphia police officer more than four decades ago.

The 71-year-old defendant, William Barnes, is charged with murder. The man he shot recently died and the coroner said the death stemmed from his 1966 gunshot wound.

Barnes' public defender had asked for bail, but a judge denied it.

Judge James DeLeon did agree to have Barnes removed from general prison population and put into a city prison medical ward.

The defense lawyer says Barnes has heart trouble and that Barnes has been roughed up by other inmates. He says Barnes is in fragile health.

DeLeon postponed Barnes' preliminary hearing until Dec. 11.
