WEB EXTRA: Angela Russell Talks To Barnes In 2006

by Walt Hunter
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. (CBS 3) ― Family and friends bid a final good-bye to a courageous Philadelphia Police Officer who succumbed to injuries sustained in a shooting 41-years ago.

Walter Barclay was shot and wounded while responding to a burglary call, leaving him confined to a wheelchair for 41 years. The gunman, William Barnes, was convicted of wounding Barclay in 1966 and served seven to 15 years in prison for the crime. Barnes was taken into custody this week and could now face murder charges.

Barclay received full honors and was laid to rest at the age of 64; his crippled body at peace.

"He's at rest. He was put through hell for 40 some years, he is at rest now," said retired Officer Charles McSorely.

The Upper Merion streets were filled with grieving family, friends and police officers from around the area as Barclay made his way to his final resting place at the Valley Forge Memorial Gardens in King of Prussia. Some did not know Barclay, but attended to bid the fallen hero a final salute.
