Tony Luke's Makes Special Delivery For 1
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
A Philadelphia man who was hospitalized with a serious disease had a craving for a cheesesteak and put a call into Tony Luke's eatery, who explained they did not deliver to Jefferson Hospital. But when Tony Luke himself heard about it, he made a special exception and delivery.
Tom Sheehan might be considered a tough guy, despite spending the last month at Jefferson Hospital fighting leukemia. He has managed to keep his emotions in check until recently when a local celebrity knocked on his door.
"And some big bruiser walks in and says, 'You Tom Sheehan,' and I said 'Yes,' and he said, 'I'm Tony Luke,' and I thought what the heck you doing here," patient Tom Sheehan said.
Tony Luke Jr., of the famed Tony Luke's, made a special delivery to Sheehan's hospital room.
Luke dropped by after a friend of Sheehan's in Chicago called the restaurant and asked for delivery but was told they do not deliver.
However when Tony himself found out about the situation, he made an exception.
"I was like a battling fool," Sheehan said, "I just absolutely lost it and he's leaving and saying, 'Don't forget you're going to call me and we're going to have lunch down there,' and all I could do is this, put my thumb up and I couldn't even look at him."
The pork sandwiches came at the right time. Because of his treatment, Sheehan had been suffering from mouth sores.
"Swallowing water hurt or swallowing saliva hurt," Sheehan said.
A couple of weeks before when Sheehan's son brought him Tony Lukes, it hit the spot.
"I took one bite of the sandwich and swore it was MANNA From Heaven," Sheehan said.
Sheehan said he feels blessed.
"It wasn't two sandwiches. It was the gift," Sheehan said.
And to top that, Tony Luke sent Sheehan a fruit basket and a note Wednesday expressing faith that he will be okay. Luke told CBS 3 that he hopes everyone will keep Tom Sheehan in their prayers.
