Temple Caught Up In Puppy Problem

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Temple University's annual Owl Club fundraiser has some dog-lovers crying foul. On the list of auction items was a nine-week-old Golden Retriever puppy. It is a cute idea, but it is illegal.

Temple basketball coach Dawn Staley simply could not resist.

A pure bred Golden Retriever was on the auction block Saturday night at the Temple - St. Joe's University basketball game.

The owl club led the pup across the gym floor to pump up the enthusiasm for a buyer.

However, in Pennsylvania, it is illegal. Only a licensed kennel can put a dog up for bid.

All parties said they were not ignoring the law, they didn't know about it, but the University could face a citation.

"All I can say is the dog is going to have a great home," Staley said.

The former WNBA and Temple star, who had seen the dog a couple days before the auction, offered the winning bid of $700 on behalf of her mom in Virginia.

"She's got an empty nest up there at her house and I thought Papi would be a great companion and a great addition to our family," Staley said.

It is a noble motivation and a considered decision. Adoption shouldn't be on a whim and that is why the law exists.

"They say it takes a village to raise a kid, he's got a village to raise him," Staley said.

Now Papi has a Virginia home to call his own.
