Cyber Monday is the most wonderful time of the year for
online sales.
It started three years ago
when the internet gave shoppers a chance to let their fingers do the walking,
after they learned great buys were just a mouse click away.
Technology Reporter Stephanie Abrams explains how to stay
safe on the internet while shopping for big savings.
Those who avoided the mess and crowds of Black Friday, are
set to invade the internet on Cyber Monday. That's when the National Retail
Federation says over 80 percent of online retailers will be offering huge
promotions.
That includes free shipping
and sometimes 70 or even 80 percent off!
It's a way to bank on your dollar after Black Friday.
But.. don't be lured to the dark side,
viruses can be insidious.
Agent Keith
Falcone with The Geek Squad explains, "Viruses are always very prevalent on the
internet and attachments in the email are fully capable of giving you that virus
on your computer."
Falcone went on to explain that your identity is a terrible
thing to lose, and that's the first thing a virus goes after.
He says you need to look out for the emails
you get from places you don't recognize.
When we went to the repair center at the Best Buy in South
Philadelphia, we learned the "Win Antivirus Pro 2009" is the most common and
destructive virus recently.
It looks
like a program that scans for viruses, but that's its disguise.
It's really scanning your computer for
information before it takes over.
At times
experts have had to repair hardware to fix the damage.
That's why Falcone warns, "If it's too good
to be true, ultimately on the internet it's probably too good to be true."
The Geek Squad recommends three websites for Cyber Monday
shopping:
www.CyberMonday.com
www.BensBargains.net
www.TechBargains.com
Falcone also says to make sure your transaction is safe,
just look at the address bar in your browser.
If it says
http://www...it's
an open transaction.
You need to make
sure that address bar has an S after the http.
So if you see
https://www... Then you're in safe to enter
your credit card information.
Now that we've told you all how to shop, we know many of you
will be clicking away shortly.
The most
recent survey by shop.org says nearly 73 million people will be shopping for
holiday gifts from their cubicle at work!
