Exclusive: Man Loses Finger In Stroller Mishap
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
A Philadelphia couple is outraged over a stroller company, they say, failed to notify them of a malfunction that caused a serious injury.
As the parents of two little girls, Mike and Heather depend on their double seated stroller, saying its lightweight, durable and never considered it to be a safety hazard.
"You never think one of the things you have to guard against is the potential of piece of your finger being taken off," said Mike
In early November, Mike was rushed to the emergency room in need of a surgery after part of his left middle finger was cut off when he pushed the release button and pulled open the stroller.
"When I actually found that piece of his finger in the stroller, that was very shocking to me," said Heather.
It turns out, the stroller in question, purchased from Phil and Ted's, cost the young couple more than $400 and was part of a nation-wide recall issued in 2008.
Eyewitness News has learned that around 44,000 Phil and Ted's strollers were voluntarily recalled after the U.S. consumer product safety commission indicates nine reports of fingers being injured in the stroller's hinge locking mechanism.
According to its website, Phil and Ted's are providing free hinge covers the company says will reduce the risk of injury.
Jason Crowe, president of Phil and Ted's, tells CBS 3 that the company did fulfill its requirement by the consumer product safety report to notify customers about the recall. If you have any questions regarding the stroller recall, please visit
