Toddler's Remains Found Inside South Philly Home

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Investigators are examining the remains of an 18-month-old found in a suitcase inside a South Philadelphia home. The body may be a missing child from Maryland.

The disturbing discovery was made inside the shed of a home near 13th and Fitzwater Streets on Monday.

"That case and its contents were taken to the Philadelphia medical examiner and they are telling us today that the contents of the case are consistent with human remains, possibly a child that was between one and two years of age," Lt. Frank Vanore said.

Police said a tip led them to the home and the discovery may help solve the case of a young boy reported missing from Baltimore in 2006.

"Going back to around February, the Baltimore police department contacted Philadelphia police homicide to assist them in an investigation that they had been working for some time," Lt. Vanore said. "That investigation centered around looking for a missing child."

Neighbors said an elderly man who lived at the home often hosted visitors from out of town. According to neighbors, the homeowner had a family from Baltimore stay with him about a year ago.

Investigators said they do not consider the homeowner a suspect at this point.

Police are not certain how long the remains have been hidden in Philadelphia, but said the bag contained a blanket and fabric softener. Police believe the fabric softener was used to conceal the odor of the body.

Sources believe the young child died in Baltimore and may have been strangled to death.

So far, there have been no arrests.
