Chess Game Between Friends Sparks Shooting

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) ―

Police say a chess game between two friends at a Westmoreland County apartment turned violent when one put a gun to his head and the other was shot in an ensuing scuffle.

Greensburg Police Capt. George Seranko says the bullet also narrowly missed 23-year-old Zachary Lucov's 9-month-old son who was nearby.

Police say the incident happened Thursday when Lucov pulled out a gun and said he was going to kill himself. Dennis Kleyn tried to stop Lucov and the gun went off, hitting Kleyn in the elbow. Kleyn was in fair condition at a Pittsburgh hospital.

Seranko says both men had been drinking.

Lucov is charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. He says he doesn't recall wanting to kill himself.
