Sources told CBS 3 a suspect taken into custody Sunday, 38-year-old Levon Warner, confessed to taking part in a bank robbery that led to death of the veteran police sergeant.
In his chilling alleged confession, Warner reportedly said he and suspects Howard Cain and Eric Floyd made the decision to gun down the 12-year police veteran with a high powered assault rifle when he confronted them minutes after the robbery of a Port Richmond bank.
"I call it an execution," Deputy Commissioner William Blackburn said, "The sergeant didn't have a chance."
Sources said in the alleged confession, Warner states they planned their ambush after noticing Sgt. Liczbinski make a u-turn. According to the alleged confession, one suspect stated, 'Bang him. Get the rifle.'
Sgt. Liczbinski was struck several times before having a chance to unholster his weapon. The shots from the assault rifle were so powerful that they went cleanly through both doors of the patrol car.
"It was loaded with 25 live rounds. It was, it's a deadly weapon," Blackburn said.
A few blocks from the shooting scene, 33-year-old Howard Cain, who allegedly fired the shots that killed Sgt. Liczbinski, was shot to death in a second confrontation with police. Warner was taken into custody while a third suspect, 33-year-old Eric Floyd, remains the target of a major manhunt.
"We would like him to turn himself in, but he's an extremely dangerous individual," Blackburn said.
Police said Cain had a history of 16 arrests including seven convictions and prison terms for crimes like armed robbery and resisting arrest.
Warner was arraigned and is being held without bail on charges of murder, robbery, conspiracy and related offenses.
Police said Floyd should be considered armed and dangerous. He is described as 5'8" tall, 155 pound with black hair and brown eyes.
