A student from New Jersey was critically injured during the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. History at Virginia Tech Monday. Now a Gloucester County community is praying for his safe recovery.
Sean McQuade, 21, of Mullica Hill, N.J. was one of over 15 people injured when a gunman opened fire on the campus, killing 32 people before fatally shooting himself.
The Gloucester County Times reported McQuade was critically injured when the gunman, identified as 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui, shot him in the face.
McQuade is in critical condition at Roanoke Memorial Trauma Unit in Virginia and has not yet responded to his mother and father or other relatives at his bedside. He is breathing with the assistance of a tube.
Doctors said the nature of his injuries are too delicate for them to perform surgery right now.
McQuade, a senior mathematics major at Virginia Tech, graduated from Clearview Regional High School in 2003 and played baseball.
"He was polite, his parents taught him a great value system, he was great with younger players on the team," McQuade's baseball coach at Clearview Rocco Cornacchia said.
Residents in his hometown were left in a state of shock after learning of the unspeakable violence.
"It just really kind of made me scared for everybody and crying a little bit for the family," said Kristin Klein. "You're scared to let your kids go anywhere really. I gave them all an extra hug."
Neighbors said McQuade's family left Monday to be by his side.
