N.J. Gymnast Holds 'Golden' Dreams
CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS 3) ―
A local gymnast has dreams of taking home the gold in the
summer Olympics, and it won't be the only obstacle he has had to overcome.
Sean Golden, 25, is a native of Camden, New Jersey and in a recent return to home, his friends and family already
made him feel like a winner.
Sean has been away from home while training for the Olympic games in Houston, Texas.
Sean has been a gymnast since the age of four and this
week he will compete for a spot on the Olympic team as a specialist in the
vault, floor and rings.
"I will be competing against 13 other athletes, there are
14 total and there only six spots on the team and two alternates," said Golden.
Golden grew up on Dayton Street in Camden, where drug deals are more common than
playgrounds.
"I want people to know something positive came out of Camden and I want kids to
know that as well," Sean said.
Sean's father was a cop, his mother a housewife, and he
attributes them for keeping him on the straight and narrow.
He still gets his hair cut at a local barber shop when he
is home from training and stays close to his parents.
"We had a relationship, solid and firm with our children.
We are just shaking inside because this is what he's worked for all these years,"
said Sean's mother.
Sean still remains composed through all the stress of
reaching his dreams.
"If my inner-self wasn't stronger than my physical, I
wouldn't be here."
