Slumping Economy Even Affecting 'Santa Claus'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
It is widely believed that the slumping economy is going to put a damper on the holidays, but who could have predicted that even the man in the big red suit would be hurting for a little green.
The economic turmoil is laying claim to holiday budgets and paid appearances for Santa are dwindling.
Area Santa's say their bookings are down roughly 50-percent from this time last year.
Scott Diethorne, a father of nine and truck driver by trade, resembles the big guy and said he is looking at a loss of about $1,500 if his Santa side-job does not improve.
"It means that my kids are going to get a little lower Christmas this year, and some bills are going to have to slide," Scott said.
However, all is not sour this holiday season as Shady Brook Farm Market in Yardley is actually expanding their holiday light show.
"Doing relatively inexpensive events, I think is what people are looking to do, the stay-cations," general manager Bob Fleming said.
