17-Year-Old Drowns In Salem County

CARNEYS POINT TWP., N.J. (CBS 3) ―

A 17-year-old boy drowned in a lake off the Delaware River Saturday evening in Salem County.

The victim, of Paulsboro, New Jersey, has been identified as Corey Fortson.

Fortson was swimming in the D.O.D. Wildlife Refuge Ponds in Carneys Point Township with two of his friends despite several 'No Swimming' signs posted around the pond.

He was reportedly trying to swim to an island in the middle of the pond when he drowned.

When the teen went under and didn't resurface his friends immediately called police.

The water search started on Route 130 and North Broad Street at about 5:30 p.m. and the body was found a half hour later.

Fortson was the second teenager to drown in New Jersey in two days. Haja Koroma, 14, drowned Friday while swimming in a Camden County Quarry. Koroma went underwater while swimming with family and friends. Her body was recovered later that night.
