Police Use YouTube To Help Solve Rowan Murder

GLASSBORO, N.J. (CBS 3) ― Investigators have placed a key video clip on the web site YouTube in hopes of tracking down a suspect in the deadly beating of a Rowan University student.

"Since the suspect and his companions have been described as young males, we thought it could be helpful in identifying the individual captured on store surveillance camera video to have it accessible on a young person's medium," said Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton.

The video is a 30 second clip of the suspect inside a Glassboro convenience store the night Donald Farrell was attacked.

Farrell, a 19-year-old sophomore from Boonton, N.J., was attacked while walking on campus the night of October 27.

Witnesses said five men in a vehicle approached Farrell near a convenience store just off the Glassboro campus and asked for directions to a party. Two punches to the head and a kick to the stomach knocked Farrell down. He died the following day.

The individual on tape is described as a medium-complected black male, with rounded facial features, braided hair, thin moustache and light goatee, between 20 and 24 years old and about five feet, seven inches in height, wearing a Coogi hoody.

"A lot of people get their media through the computer, through the internet, putting it on YouTube stands to reason that perhaps the individuals who use it as their primary source may view it and may contact us," Dalton said.

Detectives from the prosecutor's major crimes unit, the Glassboro Police Department and Rowan University Police in Glassboro continue to follow leads - some as fresh as this week - in the homicide. There have been no arrests to date.

A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Farrell's death.

"We are one tip away from solving this crime," Dalton said.

A 24-hour tip line and confidential e-mail address have been established for anyone with information on the attack. The telephone number is 856-307-7180. The e-mail address is mcu@co.gloucester.nj.us
