A South Jersey man is facing drug charges following a collision in which police allege he was texting about a drug deal when he struck a bicyclist.
Police said 28-year-old Robert Sharrer, of Pemberton Township, was arrested in connection to the Monday evening collision.
According to investigators, Sharrer was allegedly texting about a drug deal when he struck a female bicyclist on the shoulder of Route 70 in Medford.
Investigators said they found prescription drugs during a search of Sharrer's car. Sharrer is facing drug charges, but charges for the accident are apparently still pending.
In an interview with CBS 3, Sharrer admitted that he was texting at the time of the collision and was in possession of approximately 17 prescription pills.
However, Sharrer strongly disputed that he was texting about a drug deal at the time of the collision. Sharrer told CBS 3's Todd Quinones that he is a recovering addict and the pills are prescribed to him to help him cope with the addiction.
"I totally cooperated with the police, I let them search the car. The pills that they found, they just weren't in the bottle, but I have prescriptions for them," Sharrer explained.
He did not specifically say what the text message concerned.
The female bicyclist was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where she is listed in stable condition.
Sharrer was released after posting bail.
